A PASSION FOR GOOD TASTE.

Event Terrazas, Bareal

This Cheval des Andes event took place in Barreal this year, a lush valley in the midst of the Andes.

An amazing geological wonder known as “Pampa del Leoncito”, about 18 miles from the town, hosted the highest-altitude polo game in the Americas.

CHEVAL DES ANDES AT BARREAL : AN EXTRAORDINARY PLACE TO CELEBRATE AN EXTRAORDINARY WINE

It could not have been held anywhere else. Set in the wild beauty of Barreal at the foot of the San Juan mountains, this annual event organized by Cheval des Andes was deemed an absolute success by all those attending. The adventure began March 6th, with Moet Hennessy and Cheval des Andes executives, prominent members of Argentine society, international wine professionals and journalists from all over the world arriving in Mendoza.

From the airport, they set off on a 124-mile journey along endless curves and the loneliest gravel road, after which they found themselves in a lush valley among water and mountains. They were in Barreal. Easy to get to? No. But that’s what made it so exceptional.

The first event - a dinner party that evening at world-renowned Paso de los Patos. Created by chef Marcos Zabaleta, the gourmet menu was accompanied by the 1999, 2002, 2004 and 2007 vintages of Cheval des Andes. Everything was enjoyed under the stars in the outdoor courtyard,
Chief Winemaker Nicolás Audebert gave a warm welcome speech describing the place and the activities to come. Towards the end of the meal, llama shawls were distributed to guests to help them withstand the nightly drop in temperature in Barreal, which can be quite substantial. Although the guests were probably immune to the cold, as they spent the evening dancing up a storm.

The next day dawned clear and windless. At around 10 a.m., Pampa del Leoncito - one of the most breathtaking spots in Barreal - was the place to be for the polo competition. What used to be a lake many years ago is today a dry, 8.7-by-3-mile bright white plain with smooth, clay earth. The Cheval des Andes team had set up an unprecedented scene – the plain transformed into a luxury polo field and camp. Two Bedouin-style tents replete with comfortable chairs and meeting spaces inside had been erected, with a clay oven, and several viewing areas. With the Andes as a backdrop and, in the foreground, the Mercedario, the tallest mountain in San Juan, the stage was set for extraordinary.

Very punctually, at 11 o’clock, the main event began. The 4-chukker polo game matched highly skilled players, including professional polo players the Bernal brothers, and Audebert himself, and was very exciting. Spectators included company executives Pierre Lurton (CEO of Cheval des Andes and Cheval Blanc), Xavier Ybarguengoitia (CEO of Möet-Henessy Estate & Wines) and Herve Birnie Scott (Estate Director of Bodegas Chandon including Cheval des Andes & Terrazas de los Andes), international press representatives and prominent players in the gastronomy industry, such as Andrés Porcel, owner of Chila restaurant, and Paula Bezerra de Mello , PR Director of Fasano hotels in Brazil, amongst others. The game ended with a friendly score of 4-4.

Then it was time for lunch. The chef delighted with dishes such as gazpacho, plough-disc fried cheese pies and grilled sweetbreads, and lavender honey on a criolla salad with fruit, among other delicacies. Everything was accompanied by Dom Pérignon champagne and then by the latest vintage of Cheval des Andes 2007. After dessert - a chocolate fondue with fresh fruit –the afternoon wound down and everybody got back in their vehicles to go back to Mendoza. But there was no sadness. The reason? That evening dinner was to be served at the spectacular Vineloft of Cheval des Andes.

Although the excellence and originality of these annual events are a hallmark of the brand, one thing is clear after the Barreal experience: the bar has been raised really high.
