Founder and Estate Director
Originally from France, Terrazas de los Andes’s Founder Hervé Birnie‑Scott grew up in the Loire Valley. After graduating with a degree in Agronomy Engineering and Winemaking, Hervé went on to become an expert in cool‑climate viticulture, working in locales such as Sancerre, Victoria, Tasmania, and Napa Valley. In 1991, he ventured to Argentina with Moët Hennessy on a project to search for high‑altitude vineyards in Mendoza. Hervé’s explorations led to the creation of Terrazas de los Andes, which released its first vintage in 1996.
From the late 1990s to 2008, Hervé held several different roles within Moët Hennessy based in Argentina and Europe, including Winemaking and Operations Director for the Chandon Estate; Operations Director for Moët & Chandon, Dom Perignon, Mercier, and Ruinart; and Technical Director for Estates & Wines in Toro, Spain. In 2009, he returned to Mendoza and to Terrazas de los Andes, where he continues his passion for the art of winemaking as Estate Director.
Born in Argentina, Claudio has been passionate about the transcendent power of nature and the diverse flora and fauna of his homeland since he was a child (back when he just called them ‘plants’). His childhood wonder and curiosity evolved into an earnest pursuit of a career in agronomy. He first ventured to the Pacific Northwest Region of the United States where he cut his teeth in the wine industry and learned about viticulture before returning to Argentina. In his native Mendoza, Claudio refined his newfound knowledge and accumulated two decades of experience before eventually landing at Terrazas de los Andes to serve as the Vineyard Director, where he oversees the development of our vineyards and grapes.
Born and raised in Mendoza, José inherited a passion for winemaking from his family tree, including his great-grandfather who, impressively, was the first agronomist in Argentina to become a winemaker. Following in his grandfather’s footsteps and guided by his own natural talents and passions, José studied Oenology and Food Industry at Don Bosco University before completing a postgraduate degree in Viticulture Development at the National University of Córdoba. Today, as the Head Winemaker at Terrazas de los Andes, he is widely celebrated as the “guardian of quality.”

As a Winemaker, Maximiliano plays an important role in ensuring the quality of all our wines. His favorite part of his job is following the entire journey of the winemaking process– from the moment the grapes arrive at the winery, to the bottling, to tasting the unique terroir in each varietal and vintage.
Crafting quality wine is an elaborate and delicate process and Juan’s familiarity with each step plays an invaluable role. After graduating from the School of Agricultural Sciences at National University of Cuyo, Juan first joined Terrazas de los Andes in 2005 as a Quality Control Technician of grapes and winery operations and today he serves as Vineyards Sustainability Manager taking care of two of our key vineyards in Luján de Cuyo.
A native of Mendoza and a wine industry veteran, Velentín developed an affinity for the industry at a young age thanks to his father who worked in Tupungato winery. His professional experience officially began at Chandon on the bottling line, a time during which a fortuitous 1991 encounter with Terrazas de los Andes founder, Hervé, would spark a fast bond and a meaningful working partnership. Today, as Winery Supervisor, Valentín oversees 7 operators, ensuring the quality of our wine and the safe working conditions of our employees.
As the Las Compuertas Vineyard Supervisor, Luis looks after our most treasured jewel: an un‑grafted, pre‑phylloxera Malbec vineyard planted in 1929. In addition to his valuable service to the winery, Luis is currently pursuing a degree in Agronomy at the Technological Institute (ITU) in Tupungato, Uco Valley.
